5 Steps to Kick The Yeahbuts to the Curb


I was fortunate to take a vacation last week with my family. We visited a cabin in Northern Minnesota we had been to previously. There are no televisions, and the only access to Internet is at the lodge and is spotty at best. This leaves a lot of time to fish, boat, kayak, swim (the lake was a bit cold for that), play games, ride bike, run, chat, and think. I don't know about you, but when I get to thinking and chatting, some great things happen. One of those times was on a run with my sister. She was biking while I ran, though it wasn't much of a run...more like a slow jog. I have been rehabbing a hamstring injury, and these were my first runs in a couple of months. My sister used to bike with me when I trained for marathons, so she is very adept at keeping me distracted through meaningful conversation. We were talking about my work coaching people. She was wondering what we do, how we do it, and why more people don't utilize coaches to support them. During this conversation, the concept of "The Yeahbuts" came up. We talked about how often in our lives we wanted to make a change and the Yeahbuts would show up. It goes something like this: I want to go to law school. Yeahbut, that takes a long time, and I am too old. Man, I would love to start my own business so I wouldn't have to deal with other people's ideas about what needs to be done. Yeahbut I need to make "x" amount of money, and that won't happen right away. I need to join a gym, so that I lose "x" pounds. Yeahbut I don't really have time right now. I should really cut back on my snacking. Yeahbut I get so hungry at night.


You get the idea.

Those Yeahbuts appear in our minds with every excuse to keep us where we are and prevent us from changing. 


They are tricky. They are very convincing.

How do we kick the Yeahbuts to the curb? *We decide what we want *We set goals and tell people about them *We create action steps toward those goals *We ask for help and support *We take ACTION! It is time to make your life what you want it to be. What change is it that you are allowing the Yeahbuts to interfere with in your life? How would your life be better if you could silence the Yeahbuts and make that change?
